Miriam Ruiz: Sexism? Hostility?

The story seems to have started with Damog supporting sexism and xenophobia in Debian, followed by Bernhard’s comment about that not being tolerable under Debian’s flag. Aigarius replied kinda shocked that stopping verbal abuses and violence would be censorship. AJ clearly explained the reasons why that shouldn’t be tolerated in Debian, but Aigarius seems to keep thinking that poor jerks are being discriminated when they’re not allowed to insult us. Wouter seems to be tired of the whole topic. Am I missing any chapter? Now my turn: We are on the right way. Since the Debian-Women project started, we have being able to achieve a friendly and non-sexist environment inside Debian, which is something that I’d really like to keep. It doesn’t really mind that a couple of people try to go back to a hostile environment. Trolls just do exist, I guess, but they are not representative of the general feeling of the people inside Debian. Damog, I won’t get the fuck out of here, like it or not. It seems to me that it’s just a couple of you who are happy to be in such an aggressive environment as the one you’re promoting. For what I know, most of Debian people are happy to live in peace. You don’t have social life? You don’t like it? That’s your problem, dude, but don’t ask us to leave ours. I respect you, you know I have always done. I’m just very disappointed with your comment. Really. Making fun of other people’s problems and traumas is simply bullying. I hope you think about it. For the rest of Debian, keep up the good job. Right now my feeling is that the level of sexism, racism, ageism, homophobia, hostility and unfriendliness in general inside Debian development’s world is below the average in the Free Software world. It’s nice to be there, and I’m really proud of belonging here, which is something I cannot say about every group in Free Software. I’d like to keep it that way. Sorry for the aggressiveness in this weblog entry.

David Moreno Garza: ##debian-offtopic

It’s incredible how one troll can split a channel up. It’s incredible how the sexist shit can be spread all over the place. It’s incredible, not wait, not incredible, it’s sad, sadder and sadder, to see what Debian has become. The Debian social life has become a center for dramas of all kinds, since sexist traumas, transgenders issues, people with too much free time, real good technical people leaving, freaking big farts in Debian thinking on leaving the project, elitist dolls clubs, small wannabes who think they can treat other people unrespectful. Debian itself is now its own slow killer. There has always been old people, new people, people leaving and people entering, but when you see other projects just as good as we were, some of us remain because of the social side of Debian. But is it really worthwhile? Perhaps not anymore. And because of the non-sense shit from the debian-women mailing list thread, here are a few random greps on my old logs:
Jun 11 07:19:29 <directhex work> timgoh0, for the same reason a woman in skimpy lingerie is sexier than a women in the nude, lesbians are sexier to watch than a threesome. it’s the *potential* being presented. the thinly veiled chance for the imagination to run wild Sep 13 00:23:27 <tech> women are mostly useless Sep 12 23:28:10 <tech> nvz: just stay away from women, it’s easier Mar 04 20:12:32 <nvz> women like to be refluffled Jan 13 12:50:07 <toresbe> rcox: Some idiot got out on the debian-women mailing list and said #debian-offtopic was “sexist”.
Of course we are sexists, just like we are men and women unfriendly, we laugh about nationalities, we like fluffling, make fun of others and we like to be nipple smited. Love it or get the fuck out of there. We’re an unofficial community now. Who would want to be official after all?

David Moreno Garza: Saturday

Last Saturday, we attended a party at stew and rcox’ place in Brooklyn. Biella, Micah, Clint and a bunch of other people were also there. It was very nice and we had a lot of fun. I had the chance to tell Clint that some of his blog postings really intrigue me; I now feel relieved. Besides, I’ve learned that boxing against Micah on the Wii is so tiring that even days after, my arms and back still hurt :-( We left at around 1:45 am.
On our way back to Harlem, we stopped to have some tacos at El dolo on the 8th Ave and the 14th St, as Kevin suggested me before; for our surprise, they were amazing and have been so far, the best Mexican food we’ve had in NYC :-) So, after getting off on the 145th station and walked nine blocks, we arrived to our warm place at 4:30 am.

David Moreno Garza: RockBox / NYC PM / Long walk / Pics

So, I have just installed RockBox on my iPod and I have liberated it :) It’s nice to see people amazed on an iPod running something that’s different from the usual firmware. Now, both my iPod and PowerBook are not running Apple software, muahaha!
Since we are in NYC now, and even before, we’ve been looking for interesting activities in the area. Tomorrow, the New York City Perl Mongers will handle their monthly meeting. At 6:30 PM at d.b.a, 41 First Avenue (between 2nd and 3rd Streets), map: http://tinyurl.com/2yqg4d. Tomorrow, we were supposed to go see a prospective apartment in Bushwick, Brooklyn in the afternoon; I’ll see if we can still make it. Otherwise, if you are in the area, feel free to attend!

Yesterday, we went to the Yankee Stadium. Actually we only went outside it, since we didn’t carry any tickets, we just wanted to see the neighborhood. It was amazing, since there was a game and we witnessed thounds of people commuting to it to watch the game. It was a nice experience only watching the people and all the buzz around the stadium. After that, we got back to Manhattan on the subway and dropped off on the 57th and Madison Ave: From there, we walked around sixty freaking blocks to get to our apartment near Essex & Delancey St. After checking on Google maps, it was a ~6 kms walk! It only took us 2:30 hrs. Heh. On the good side, we happened to see lots of nice places of Lexington and other avenues.Tonight, we’ll be walking to Little Italy and Chinatown, although we already know those neighborhoods, since Alex took us there when were here last June.
So, we are uploading our pics to the NYC photo set of our flickr account, raquelydavid.

David Moreno Garza: Moving to NYC

So, we will be moving to New York City, starting next week. We hope to spend a year there, but who knows, we might be there for only a few months, weeks, or more than a year! Life changes, that’s why we are moving now, right? :) Only constant is change, isn’t it? Anyway, we are pretty excited about this. This has been something we have been expecting since May/June and we are finally ready to go, we’ll see how it goes, hopefully good. School from my side will have to get stalled, again. I’ll be able to study there, but don’t know for sure now, we are trying to settle first, and then see possibilities. So, if you know/have contact with, a good place in Manhattan, Brooklyn or perhaps Queens, please let me know, that’d be highly appreciated. Bummer, yet another two Mexicans in the States :-D UPDATE: Of course, I’m looking for a good place to live (apartment in rent, or similar). Everything else has already been covered. :)

DebConf team: DebConf Resources (Posted by Joerg Jaspert)

I just setup a DNS entry for panama.mini.debconf.org, on request of David Moreno Garza. He also got a mailing-list for that upcoming mini Debian Conference. Which reminded me to blog about debconf.org resources again, so that more people know/remember that there is something they can use whenever they organize a Debian meeting. If you happen to organize a meeting of Debian Developers / interested Debian people you can chose to use any debconf.org resource you need for it. This currently means:
DNSa name within .debconf.org. Either pointing to your host, if you have one, or see below for hosting.
Current style seems to be $something.mini.debconf.org, but we also have some miniconfX.debconf.org entries, so are pretty open. And in case it doesn’t fit into .debconf.org - there is always .debconf.net without restrictions (as its not really used currently).
Mailing-ListWant a mailing-list?
HostingDon’t have an own server for it? .debconf.org possibly has space for you.
You would manage the content via a svn repository.
CMSConference Management System - AKA pentabarf. Available in future, more info on that point when we finally switched to a version that let’s us easily give access to other people without giving out all personal data. :)
GalleryUse our gallery. Actually - don’t bother asking, just use it, as long as you use it for Debian related event pictures.
Want more? We have a page listing most of our resources, maybe you find something you need. Want something? Mail admins@debconf.org and describe what you want, most possibly we will make it happen. Or try to get one of us admins on IRC, you are looking for one of the nicks Ganneff, mhy, sgran, gwolf or h01ger. No, we do not bite … usually. :)

David Moreno Garza: Sapo verde soy yo

I’m 23 years old since 2 am on this August, 8th. Thanks for the congratulations messages I’ve received so far :-), resiak even sang happy birthday to me on IRC! Next year (August, 8th, 2008), 08-08-08, I will turn 24! 08+08+08! Something really bad is going to happen because of that :-) Probably that’s gonna be my really lucky year. But how en Earth can I be more lucky than what I am today? :-P In the meantime, I’ve invited my closest local friends to a bar this Friday to celebrate my birthday. Let the rum and tequila flow, baby! Yeah!

David Moreno Garza: An end has a start

July 31st was my last day working for Sixbell-Nekotec Solutions (formerly known as Nekotec Tecnolog a). I lasted there three years. It seems like a life was spent there, heh: I entered after turning 20 and I’m leaving some days before I turn 23. Our future is still a bit fuzzy, but we are working on it. In the meantime, I’m getting back full-time to Mathematics next 13rd. But if our plans succeed and if everything goes right, we’ll be moving by the end of August or early September. Heh, yes, leaving school temporarily, again! Anyway, I’m unemployed right now. Listening to music most part of the day, taking Raquel to work, coding a bit here, there, doing some Debian labor, etc. Meh. An End Has A Start is one of the albums by the English band, The Editors, it makes a great title for my post now :-). I just listened to Taraf de Ha douks’ Maskarada, it’s not that great as the masterpiece as The Continuing Adventures. I’m getting addicted to the Cold War Kids.

David Moreno Garza: I am. Are you?

You really have to be a fucking son of a bitch for living in a world where you go out and see everyday’s people living on extreme poorness, unfairness all over the place, six year-olds performing like clowns on red stops and your fellow compatriots dying on the streets, among hundreds of all other kinds of shit happening. You really have to be one when, after all of that, you finally arrive and seat on your so comfortable chair and start blogging, working with free software or playing a movie on your iPod. We are all so cynic, and I’m particularly bitter. [ UPDATE: abrotman also pointed me to the term hypocrite. Yes. ]

The efforts of these volunteers collectively make the Perl language and the Perl community better for all of us. – The Perl Foundation. 2007 Recipients
Allison Randal
Allison is at the center of the Perl community. She’s been president of The Perl Foundation, a leader and manager of various parts of the Perl 6 and Parrot efforts, as well a Perl author and editor. Her latest contribution to Perl is version 2 of the Artistic License, under which most open source Perl code, and Perl itself, is licensesd “under the terms of Perl itself”.
Tim O’Reilly

David Moreno Garza: DebConf8 official training started!

So, my official training for DebConf8 has just started! What is this training about? Well, since a couple of weeks ago, I had seen a little Argentinian restaurant two blocks from my place. It is not new to find Argentinian places on the area, specially on La Condesa, where lots of foreigns reside within Mexico City. Argentinians are known in some circles, because they usually take their dogs for walking on Parque Espa a, Parque M xico and the neighborhoods nearby (not that Mexicans don’t walk dogs, it’s just a bit more stereotyped for Mexicans to put dogs on the roofs of buildings and not taking very good care of them). Anyway, since I live on Roma Sur, which is just crossing Insurgentes avenue away from La Condesa, it is also a crowded neighborhood (which is more like a family-kind area), the nearest Argentinian place was this, Che Charr a. I had no idea where I could have a nice cheap lunch, so I headed there. The prices were not nuts, but it wasn’t cheap as eating in the street, of course. Che Charr a is a small place, they have like five tables inside, and two or three outside on the sidewalk. I ordered a Bah a Blanca meal, which was basically, three empanadas (you could choose between ham and cheese, meat, chicken and corn/cheese), a couple of cups of fresh water and a dessert flan (which name I just can’t remember, but it was Argentinian typical). The Mexican part couldn’t be left aside, that’s why they offer chimichurri or spicy sauce :) Besides, they give jamaica-water (which is some kind of juice of a Mexican flower, which is delicious, DebConfers could probably had some on DC6, I bet you can only find it here). At the end, I ordered a black-chocolate alfajor, which was extremely delicious, but cold, since it was on the fridge. So, that’s my training: Getting ready for DC8/Argentinian food! After a quick chat with ASCIIGirl, I’ve decided to take this a bit further, I’ll be going to Che Charr a or other .ar restaurants, at least once every two/three weeks and have something different each time, take pictures of places/dishes, etc. My official Argentinian food training! Who joins the challenge?

David Moreno Garza: Back

Yeah, we are almost two weeks back now, but until now I can feel we are done with lots of pending issues.

To summarize, I left DebConf on Saturday morning, arrived NYC on the afternoon where Raquel was waiting for me. By Sunday, we had the very nice chance to meet with abrotman, rcox and stew. We stayed at stew and rcox’s place until Tuesday, when we got back. We also had the chance to meet with people that we have been working for remotely. We were walking around in NYC, and suddenly, the 5th avenue became multicolor. It was the gay pride parade. You can take a look at the pics on the gallery, lots of gay people. Our visit to NYC was pretty gayish actually, since we spent our first night in Chelsea, presenced an electronic music festival or similar for lesbians, and the next day, first row on the parade :-)

And that’s it, since we came back until like yesterday, life was a mess; lots of work pending to deliver and many other issues. Finally, we are right now settled up again, enjoying a cold rainy nice weather in Mexico City with very cheap beer (compared with UK pints!) and loved people :-) Thanks to all who made such a wonderful DebConf, even that, in my case, I arrived late and left early, it was just great (thanks also to MJ Ray, specially; and also to all people who was worried about my arrival, you know who you are, thanks). Thanks also to Mike and Rachel who hosted us, they are a very nice couple. And also, thanks to Alex who joined us in NYC, coming from Philadelphia, spent a nice day with us, took us to Chinatown and Little Italy and gave me a Phillies baseball cap (just as exchange of the worldwide famous umbrella hat).
